Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in men and women in the U.S., and it claims more lives than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined, according to UT/West Institute for Cancer Research.
The American Lung Association reports that Tennessee has the fourth highest rate of lung cancer in the country. Early detection key. Annual screenings can reduce the lung cancer death rate by up to 20 percent.
The “Love Your Lungs” event is Feb. 15 at the West Cancer Center’s Midtown location, 1588 Union Ave. To qualify for the free screening, you must meet the following criteria:
- Are you uninsured?
- Are you between 55 and 77 years old?
- Are you a 30 pack-year smoker (meaning one pack per day for 30 years, two packs per day for 15 years, etc.)
- Are you a current smoker or have stopped smoking within the last 15 years?
